Pinworm Preparation

    Collect

    Peri-Anal Touch Prep using clear tape or SWUBE Tube.
    Collect specimens upon wakening, before bathing or bowel movement;or late in the evening when the patient has been sleeping for several hours.

    Stability

    Up to 24 hours at room temperature.
    Refrigerate if the specimen will not be received in the Laboratory within 24 hours of collection.

    Swube is preferred specimen.

    Use of "frosted" / non-transparent tape ; stool specimen

Remarks

SWUBE Tube available in Microbiology Laboratory.
Swube Collection:
Hold the paddle by the cap and remove it from the tube.
Examine the paddle to locate the "sticky side".
Separate the buttocks and press the "sticky side" against several areas of the perianal region.
Replace the paddle in the tube and label according to specimen labeling requirements.
