    Blood in blood culture bottle - DO NOT submit bone marrow in a blood culture bottle (see Body Fluid Culture for bone marrow)

    Volume Required

    No greater than 4mLs of blood

    Minimum Required

    No minimum but 4mLs preferred (See Remarks)

    Transport

    Within one (1) hour at room temperature

    Stability

    Up to 2 hours after collection

    Unacceptable conditions

    Refrigeration; removing stopper of bottle

Remarks

Larger blood volumes promotes faster positivity;
Routine Blood Culture is appropriate for bacteria AND yeast; blood for Mycobacterial culture should be collected (max 1.5mLs) in the Isolator Tube available thru the Microbiology Laboratory.
Blood Cultures for both bacteria and fungus: only one bottle needs to be submitted and should be ordered as

Fungal Blood Culture. Blood cultures for fungus only should be submitted in a blood culture bottle and ordered as Fungal Blood Culture

Blood Cultures for SBE are submitted in the routine blood culture bottle but ordered for SBE (see SBE listing for details).
