Collect
Skeletal muscle
Volume Required
3 pieces skeletal muscle tissue measuring 0.5 cm x 1.0 cm
Minimum Required
2 pieces skeletal muscle tissue measuring 0.5 cm x 1.0 cm
Transport
One biopsy wrapped in gauze slightly moistened with normal saline. Immediately deliver to pathology on wet ice. Remaining biopsy specimens should be placed in white tissue cassettes, 1 piece / cassette, and directly frozen in liquid nitrogen in the OR and then transported to Pathology directly in Dewar with liquid nitrogen.Outside cases: Please refer to Muscle Biopsy General Instructions.

Remarks
Notify pathology (4-1728) prior to biopsy. Send OR personnel to pick up Dewar of liquid nitrogen and white cassettes. Bring biopsy specimens immediately to Pathology during working hours as listed above. THIS SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE AFTER HOURS, WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS. Outside Consultations: please only send muscle biopsies on Mondays - Thursdays; never send specimens on weekends or holidays. All outside consultations should be accompanied by a completed Muscle Biopsy Requisition Form. For additional information please refer to Muscle Biopsy General Instructions.
