The Division of Neonatology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia provides comprehensive level 4 care for critically ill newborns and premature infants in Philadelphia and area hospitals. Our staff of more than 50 board-certified neonatologists offers a variety of services to referring physicians including outreach, consultation, transport and inpatient intensive care. We are available to help you at any time.

Division of Neonatology

The Division of Neonatology provides comprehensive care for critically ill newborns and infants, including consultation, transport, and inpatient intensive care in theHarriet and Ronald Lassin Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit.

In addition, through CHOP Newborn Care, our division provides comprehensive care in the intensive care nurseries at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Chester County Hospital, Doylestown Hospital, Holy Redeemer Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenixville Hospital, University Medical Center Princeton and Shore Memorial Hospital.

Neonatal care team

In addition to board-certified attending neonatologists, the newborn care team consists of fellows, residents, physician assistants, staff nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, ECMO specialists, clinical staff, charge nurses, respiratory care practitioners, social workers, dietitians, case managers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and lactation specialists in the unit to provide round-the-clock care.

Transport

Transport by either ground or helicopter is available 24 hours a day by a team of nurses and physicians with special expertise in dealing with problems of the newborn and young infant. To arrange a transport, please call 215-590-3083 and selection menu option #9 to be directly connected to the Emergency Transport Center.

Research

The Division of Neonatology, under the leadership of Phyllis A. Dennery, MD, is involved in numerous laboratory and clinical research activities focused on development, lung disease, the fetal origins of disease, molecular mechanisms and use of nitric oxide, biomarkers of neonatal conditions, pharmacology and more.

Patients in the Neonatal/Infant Intensive Care Unit have access to any specialty services they require.

Education

Our three-year Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program prepares physicians for a career in academic neonatal-perinatal medicine. The heart of the curriculum is intensive training in clinical care combined with didactic learning.

Outreach

The Neonatal Outreach Program promotes continuing education for phyicians, nurses and nurse practitioners from area hospitals through our weekly clinical conferences, clinical consensus meetings and rounds.
