The Children's Hospital Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit cares for more than 900 newborns each year and is currently undergoing extensive renovations to accommodate more patients.
We established the Neonatal Outreach Program in 2003 to serve the needs of all referring physicians including and beyond the immediate Delaware Valley. Our referrals come from neonatologists, pediatricians and physicians in local emergency rooms.
Our primary goal is to provide a direct link to the Division of Neonatology and ensure effective communication regarding subspecialty referrals, ongoing inpatient evaluation and care, transport referrals, back transfer and discharge information.
We also recognize and highly value the expertise offered by referring physicians and encourage their participation in our weekly clinical conferences and clinical consensus meetings. We also coordinate clinical education opportunities (physician grand rounds or nursing in-services) for staff at referring institutions.

Several Division conferences are open to healthcare professionals. They are:
A weekly neonatal clinical conference is held with the purpose of discussing patient management issues related to medical/surgical care, ECMO therapy or transport issues. The fellow involved in the care of the patient presents the case and identifies topics for discussion. Teleconferencing allows for the participation of referring physicians and should be included whenever possible. Once a month, the conference is a neonatal morbidity and mortality presentation.
Four to five times a year, a two-hour conference is held during which one fellow and one faculty member present a controversial topic in patient management. Participation of nursing, house physicians, nurse practitioners, and ancillary staff is encouraged. The group then works on a consensus statement that is adopted as a practice guideline for the division.
Our newsletter spotlights new programs and services for neonates at CHOP and throughout our affiliate hospitals.
