The Professional Practice Model

The Professional Practice Model is the shared governance structure of the Department of Nursing at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The Professional Practice Model provides a mechanism for all nursing department personnel to make decisions that improve patient care and work environment. We want to ensure that nursing staff practice in an environment that respects and values their unique contributions.

By utilizing an inclusive and collaborative approach, the Professional Practice Model fosters an environment of participation, accountability, empowerment, and respect that strengthens and improves the delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered care.

Authority of the Professional Practice Model

The Professional Practice Model encompasses a series of councils, for registered nurses, advanced practice nurses and the department as a whole, that are the legitimate forums for decision making in the department.

They retain the responsibility and accountability for the process and outcome of all issues related to professional practice, research, quality improvement, education and leadership through a shared governance structure.
