The Clinical Nutrition Department at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia provides comprehensive nutrition consultation services for patients of all ages in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Our dietitians are experts in caring for your growing child and helping your family set and reach nutritional goals.
While the children we work with have many different conditions, we believe in nurturing all children nutritionally, physically and emotionally, and supporting each family toward healthy eating and good nutrition. The clinical nutrition staff includes registered dietitians and diet technicians who work directly with patients and families to develop nutrition plans that meet the medical and cultural needs of the family.
A registered dietitian is assigned to each patient care unit to assess and consult with the medical staff on all children on special diets, modified formulas, enteral tube feedings and parenteral (IV) nutrition. The dietitian also provides nutritional assessment that includes:
If your child will be home on tube feedings, we suggest making nutrition consultation a part of your discharge planning. Ask your doctor or case manager to set up nutrition consultation outpatient before leaving the hospital. Our team will also provide instructions for patients who require modified diets and special formulas.
All patients on parenteral (IV) nutrition are routinely monitored by the Nutrition Support Service (NSS) which consists of dietitians, data collectors, pharmacists, nutrition fellows, and physicians. The medical progress, nutritional status, and laboratory data of these patients are monitored to ensure optimal nutritional support and patient safety. Patients who go home on parenteral nutrition are followed by the Home PN team.
