Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at the Cancer Center

How Our BMT Team Works with Your Family

Attending Physicians

If your child requires a blood or marrow transplant (BMT), you'll have a team of professionals working together to coordinate a plan for all aspects of your child’s care. First, you'll meet with one of the transplant attending physicians to discuss the risks and benefits of a BMT. And when your child is admitted for the transplant, one of these attending physicians will supervise the other physicians and professionals caring for your child. An attending physician from the BMT team will see him or her daily, including on weekends. Your attending physician team includes:

Nurse Practitioners

The nurse practitioners are responsible for maintaining and coordinating care. An outpatient nurse practitioner will be responsible for coordinating the admission process and the follow-up outpatient visits. The inpatient nurse practitioner will follow your child throughout the inpatient admission and help to arrange a smooth discharge. Both inpatient and outpatient nurse practitioners provide direct patient care. Your nurse practitioner team includes:

Social Worker

Your family will be assigned a social worker who will meet with you during the initial transplant meeting and follow your child throughout the transplant course, both inpatient and outpatient. Your social worker can provide supportive counseling should your family need help coping throughout your child's admission. She is well informed about resources available within the Hospital and in the community to help you deal with any problems you may encounter and will offer her assistance with gathering information, securing financial help and other issues. Your social worker is:

Search Coordinator

The search coordinator is responsible for the unrelated donor search process and will work with the National Marrow Donor Program to find a match for your child. Your search coordinator is:

Financial Counselor
