Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic Resources for Professionals

Referring a patient outside your care is an act of trust. You must be confident the team you refer to has the knowledge, training and experience to make a significant difference in the outcome for your patient.

At the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, we take that responsibility seriously.

What we offer you

Our experience

Many of the conditions we treat at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are rare or extremely complex; a physician may encounter only a few such cases in a year — or in an entire career. Our orthopedic team examines and treats children with a variety of inherited, congenital and acquired conditions every day.

CHOP Orthopedics is one of the busiest pediatric orthopedic centers in the nation. Last year, we had more than 53,000 outpatient visits, 3,000 inpatient visits and 3,500 surgical procedures. Our multidisciplinary team works with specialists throughout the Hospital and offers coordinated care to all patients.

Our expertise

Orthopedic care at CHOP is ranked among the top four in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and Parents magazine.

Our pediatric orthopedic team is the largest (23 attending physicians, 27 mid-level healthcare providers,10 fellows, 20-plus residents and five transition-to-adult-care faculty) and most experienced in the region.

Our physicians and researchers are active in hundreds of clinical and biomedical research projects, clinical trials and collaborative studies that examine the origins of musculoskeletal diseases, new treatments and ways to improve outcomes.

Our orthopedic team is part of larger multidisciplinary team of CHOP experts in every pediatric specialty, ensuring that children with complex multi-system disorders — such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and a host of genetic syndromes — receive the coordinated diagnosis, care and treatment they need.

Specialized programs and diagnostic tools

CHOP Orthopedics offers 13 specialty programs — including spine, hip, tumor and trauma — dedicated to diagnosing and treating pediatric musculoskeletal conditions. We offer the most up-to-date diagnostic tests, including EOS imaging, and are national leaders in "gentle" imaging for children to minimize radiation risks.

Access to care

Orthopedic care is available at eight CHOP locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. With a dedicated orthopedic surgeon available every day at our Main Campus and CHOP orthopedic physicians providing fracture care at Virtua in New Jersey, we can meet your patients' emergent orthopedic needs. In the evening, we offer orthopedic care in King of Prussia, PA, Voorhees, NJ, and at CHOP’s ED in Philadelphia.

We work with you and your patients to give you the information and support needed. If you have an orthopedic question about a patient in your care, you can discuss the case directly with a CHOP orthopedic physician by calling 215-590-1527.
