Before Your Child's Visit

How to prepare your child

Healthcare experiences can be stressful for children of all ages. Preparing your child ahead of time for the things she may experience during her healthcare visit will reduce much of her anxiety, as well as help her cope.

Providing your child with honest, accurate information will help alleviate many of your child's fears and fantasies about what will happen. We offer some Tips to Help Prepare Your Child.

What to expect

When you called to schedule your child's appointment with the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, we obtained basic information about your child, your concerns, any symptoms your child is experiencing, and insurance information.

You will receive a reminder call in the week before your child's scheduled appointment.

To assist with check-in at your child's appointment, we encourage you to download and print a copy of the New Patient Form, and bring it with you to your child's visit.

Insurance and referrals

If your insurance company requires a referral before your child can be examined at CHOP, please contact your child's primary care provider to request an electronic referral. Your child's provider will need to know the date of your child's upcoming visit at CHOP, orthopedic provider numbers (which we will give you) and the CHOP Care Network location where your child will be seen.

Additionally, some insurance companies require pre-authorization from your child's primary care provider before your child can receive X-rays at CHOP. Current imaging tests help CHOP physicians accurately diagnose your child. Referrals need to be in place at the time of your child's appointment at CHOP or the visit may be delayed or rescheduled.

If you are unsure of exactly what will be required, please call your insurance company before your child's appointment.
