Pediatric Regional Epilepsy Program

Overview of the Pediatric Regional Epilepsy Program

The Pediatric Regional Epilepsy Program (PREP) specializes in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of infants, children and adolescents with seizures and epilepsy. Our goal is to help children with epilepsy and their families enjoy lives unaffected by seizures.

For each child, we strive to understand why seizures have developed and to design a personalized treatment plan that best controls seizures with the fewest possible side effects. For most children with epilepsy, such a treatment plan involves seizure medication. For some children whose seizures have not responded well to medication, treatment options may include the ketogenic diet, vagus nerve stimulation, or epilepsy surgery.

For all children with epilepsy and their families, care involves listening to their unique concerns and answering their specific questions. PREP staff also work with primary care physicians, school personnel, therapists, and other medical specialists to care for the overall health and well-being of children with epilepsy. Such care may include special attention to learning and behavioral differences, weight management, bone health, and the unique challenges of having epilepsy as a teenager.
