Overview and mission of the Pediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program

The Fellowship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery is a 12-month program designed to provide broad-based training in all aspects of pediatric plastic surgery. The fellow will work closely with the full-time faculty in Plastic Surgery as well as faculty in related specialties for experience in managing cleft lip and palate, craniofacial anomalies, dermatologic and vascular malformations, congenital anomalies of the eye and adnexa, pediatric hand, and general pediatric plastic surgical problems.

Clinical research is encouraged and there are opportunities for laboratory research in the Craniofacial Biology Laboratory under the directorship of Hyun-Duck Nah-Cedarquist, DMD, PhD.

Conference schedules

The formal didactic education programs consist of weekly conferences based upon the plastic surgery core curriculum and the ACGME program requirements. The course directors work into the curriculum the key components of each topic, including embryology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and other fundamentals to the science of surgery. The efficacy of the didactic educational program will be formally assessed by the use of the In-Service Examination, Mock Oral Boards and the Written Board Review Examination.

Wednesday

Core curriculum conference including hand conference (pediatric fellow attendance welcome but not mandatory)

Thursday

Journal Club (2nd and 4th weeks)

Grand Rounds/Indications/Morbidity and Mortality conference (the pediatric fellow is responsible for 1 presentation/year)

Instruction for application

The one-year fellowship seeks physicians who would have completed training in an accredited plastic surgical residency program in order to sit for the American Board of Plastic Surgery certifying examination.
