Where Can We Go for Speech Therapy?

Parents of children who stutter have a variety of options when seeking therapy. Their choices include:

Although each setting has its pros and cons, the good news is that effective stuttering therapy is possible in all.

Board-Recognized Specialists in Fluency Disorders

It is worth noting that there is a variable that is more important than the actual speech therapy setting. I am referring to the experience level of the speech-language pathologist and their knowledge and comfort in working with people who stutter. The question left for the parent, then, is: How can I tell?

A good place to start is with the Specialty Board on Fluency Disorders. This Board is responsible for recognizing specialists in the area of stuttering and fluency disorders. Such specialists may have the designation BRS-FD (Board Recognized Specialist-Fluency Disorders) after their names. To be more certain, one can look at the list of specialists on the SBFD web site.

Specialists have been recognized by peers for their expertise. Equally important, they are required to remain current on advances in treating stuttering in order to maintain their specialist status. Although this is not an absolute guarantee that your child will receive effective treatment, finding a specialist certainly increases the likelihood.
