A Two-day Schedule for Aaron's Caregiver

Below is an example of a two-day schedule for Aaron's caregiver. Note: these are two days in which Aaron does not have medical appointments or medical supply deliveries, which add to the caregiver's stress and responsibilities.

Day One
Time Event
6 a.m. Wake up, shower and complete some paperwork
7 a.m. Relieve night nurse
7:15 a.m. Attempt to bottle-feed
7:45 a.m. Bottle-feeding unsuccessful, prepare bath
7:55 a.m. Remove monitor probes from baby's foot and chest
8:05 a.m. Give bath
8:35 a.m. Do g-tube site care
8:45 a.m. Dress Aaron
8:55 a.m. Attempt to bottle-feed again
9:30 a.m. Bottle-feeding unsuccessful, prepare for gravity feed
9:40 a.m. Drop gravity feeds, monitor speed and administer medications
10:10 a.m. While gravity feeds continue, collect and label empty O2 canisters - crack one full E and one full D tank
10:25 a.m. Wash and sterilize medication syringes and feeding supplies - interrupted
10:30 a.m. Aaron gagging, must assess. Console.
10:50 a.m. Transfer baby from upstairs O2 concentrator to downstairs H tank
10:55 a.m. Phone call
11:10 a.m. Attempt to finish washing and sterilizing syringes and feeding supplies
11:12 a.m. Aaron gagging, must assess. Aaron pulled out his nasal cannula - replace. Return to washing
11:15 a.m. Decide to soak syringes and supplies instead and eat
11:25 a.m. Phone call
11:30 a.m. Aaron gagging, crying. Assess. Diaper changed
Noon Aaron naps. Take inventory and reorder medical equipment
12:30 p.m. Aaron awakes
12:45 p.m. Physical therapy
1:20 p.m. Change diaper
1:30 p.m. Nebulizer treatment
1:55 p.m. Rinse out supplies from the morning and nebulizer supplies
2:10 p.m. Attempt to feed solids
2:40 p.m. Attempt to bottle-feed
3:30 p.m. Bottle-feeding unsuccessful, prepare gravity feeds
3:40 p.m. Gravity feed hung, administer medications. Monitor speed and vent tube
4 p.m. Attempt to wash supplies
4:25 p.m. Phone call
4:40 p.m. Aaron gagging, crying. Must assess. Console
5:20 p.m. Soak supplies
5:45 p.m. Rinse supplies
5:55 p.m. Aaron crying. Console
6:20 p.m. Give nebulizer treatment and change diaper
6:40 p.m. Attempt to feed solids
7:15 p.m. Attempt to bottle-feed
8 p.m. Set up gravity feeds, give medications, monitor speed and vent the tube. Eat dinner
9 p.m. Prepare Aaron for bed. Attach monitors. Change clothes. G-tube site care. Transfer baby to O2 concentrator
9:45 p.m. Baby sleeping. Caregiver break
10:15 p.m. Draw medications for tomorrow. Make formula
11 p.m. Nebulizer treatment
11:20 p.m. Rinse nebulizer supplies
11:30 p.m. Attempt to bottle-feed

2:25 a.m. Caregiver sleeps
2:45 a.m. Pulse-oximeter alarms. Must assess
2:55 a.m. Caregiver sleeps
3 a.m. Pulse-oximeter alarms. Must assess
3:10 a.m. Give nebulizer treatment
3:30 a.m. Drop gravity feeds
4:35 a.m. Caregiver sleeps
5:14 a.m. Pulse-oximeter alarms. Must assess
5:25 a.m. Caregiver sleeps
6:15 a.m. Pulse-oximeter alarms. Must assess
6:20 a.m. Pulse-oximeter alarms. Must assess
6:45 a.m. Give nebulizer treatment and change diaper
7:05 a.m. Attempt to bottle feed
7:30 a.m. Remove alarm probes, bathe and dress baby
8:15 a.m. Physical therapy. Caregiver showers and eats a snack. Change O2 tubing upstairs.
9:20 a.m. Attempt to bottle-feed
10:15 a.m. Bottle-feed unsuccessful. Drop gravity feeds and administer medications
11 a.m. Wash clothes. Rinse feeding and medication supplies
11:45 a.m. Aaron gagging, crying. Must assess. Console
Noon
12:30 p.m. Change diaper, replace nasal cannula. Read books together
1:15 p.m. Phone call. Place wash in dryer
2:05 p.m. Give nebulizer treatment
2:30 p.m. Attempt to feed solids
3 p.m. Attempt to bottle-feed
3:50 p.m. Bottle-feed unsuccessfull. Drop gravity feed, administer medications. Vent the tube.
5 p.m. Aaron naps. Caregiver prepares dinner
5:15 p.m. Phone call
5:45 p.m. Aaron awakes. Put him in the swing. Wash dishes
6 p.m. Phone call. Change diaper
6:15 p.m. Give nebulizer treatment
6:30 p.m. Attempt to feed solids
7 p.m. Attempt to bottle-feed
8 p.m. Drop gravity feeds. Caregiver eats dinner
8:45 p.m. Transfer baby upstairs
9:30 p.m. Caregiver takes a break
10 p.m. Draw medications for tomorrow, make formula. Rinse supplies
11:05 p.m. Private-pay nurse relieves caregiver
