Through your work as an EMS professional, you may observe hazards in the community that others fail to see. In addition, your work may lead you to notice patterns in the location or circumstances in which injuries occur.

Injury Research in Philadelphia

Currently, EMS professionals are involved in the work of researchers at TraumaLink, an interdisciplinary pediatric injury research center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. EMS personnel are sharing their knowledge about motor vehicle crash scenes, helping researchers understand the circumstances that produce crashes and severe injury.

Our goal is to actively involve Philadelphia EMS in injury research and surveillance to help prevent childhood injuries.

Current opportunities for EMS involvement in injury research and surveillance

As a first responder to the scene of an injury, EMS personnel know more than anyone else about the conditions and circumstances that may have produced the injury. Thisinformation is extremely valuable and can be used to track injury patterns. The data collected helps researchers work with various community resources in setting appropriate priorities for injury prevention.

To assist with local injury research and surveillance efforts, we encourage Philadelphia EMS personnel to report any injury hazards observed in the communities they serve to a new hotline at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Call 215-590-STOP (215-590-7867) and leave a message for our staff with the location and type of the hazard, along with any other information you feel is important about the community.

Future plans for collaboration between EMS and CHOP researchers
