Research in the Division of Urology
The Division of Urology at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia conducts both clinical and basic (laboratory) research through the John Duckett Center for Pediatric Urology, the research arm of our program. Our goal is to integrate clinical and basic science to improve the outcomes for children with a variety of urological conditions.
Our research efforts are divided into three areas:
- Quality Improvement – Focuses on the way we deliver care, with the goal of understanding how to provide the best medical treatment in ways that are optimal for both the family and the provider.
- Clinical Research – Seeks to understand the medical condition itself – how conditions develop, what treatments work best, and how can recurrence be prevented – as well as the experience of the patient coping with that medical condition.
- Translational Research – Combines investigation into the basic science rationale (for example, genetics, molecular biology) behind disease processes with an understanding of the clinical issues faced by patients and providers.

Our clinical and translational research were recognized during the October 2011 meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Boston.
