Natural Rotavirus Infections Dramatically Reduced (November 2008)

A rotavirus vaccine recommended for use in infants in 2006* appears to be working better than expected. During clinical trials of the vaccine, infants who received the vaccine were less likely to get severe rotavirus, be hospitalized with rotavirus disease or go to the emergency room because of the infection.

Since the vaccine has been widely used throughout communities, the rotavirus season has started later and has been less severe. This suggests that people who did not get the vaccine also benefited because of lower quantities of the virus circulating in the community.

*The rotavirus vaccine, Rotateq®, discussed in this story was developed at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
