Lyndsey: Hi, I'm Lyndsey for Healthy Kids News. We're at Children's Hospital where 7-year old Ava is leaving her annual checkup. And she's smiling.

Dr. Hausman, why do we need checkups?

Dr. Cheryl Hausman: It's really important to make sure that you're staying healthy. So when you are your age, you come every year for a checkup. We usually check your height and your weight. See how tall you are, how much weight you've gained in the past year, and then we check your hearing and your vision, and then we check your blood pressure. And then you'll get a physical exam from head to toe.

Lyndsey: What about the vaccines? Are they really necessary?

Dr. Cheryl Hausman: Vaccines are so important, Lyndsey. And the reason they are is that they prevent diseases. Some doctors can treat diseases after they happen, but vaccines do a great job making sure you stay healthy and protecting you from certain diseases. Your doctor will also probably tell you about some safety things, like making sure you wear your seat belt every time you get in the car and making sure you wear your bike helmet every time you get on your bike.

Lyndsey: Well, that doesn't sound so bad. For Healthy Kids News, I'm Lyndsey.
