Development of Pediatric-Specific Treatment Guidelines for Children and Adolescents with Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

The incidence of thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) among adolescents has dramatically increased in recent years. While guidelines have been developed to manage and treat adult thyroid nodules and thyroid malignancies, treatment guidelines for pediatric thyroid nodules and DTC did not previously exist.

Researchers at the Center for Childhood Cancer Research collaborated with 13 thyroid experts from seven countries to develop pediatric specific guidelines to help optimize care and minimize treatment-related morbidities and late effects frequently observed among children and adolescents with thyroid nodules and DTC. These new guidelines were created to maintain excellent outcomes and improve psychosocial functioning and quality of life measures for children and adolescents with thyroid nodules and DTC.
