The Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer Pathway Training Program at CHOP is designed to provide experienced sonographers with a structured and immersive opportunity to specialize in pediatric echocardiography. With CHOP’s long-standing leadership in pediatric cardiac imaging, the program combines rigorous didactic instruction with comprehensive hands-on training. Graduates will be prepared to meet the growing demand for skilled pediatric echo sonographers nationally and internationally.

Program at a glance
- Duration: 24 weeks (full-time)

Training sequence
The training sequence consists of:
- Didactic Curriculum: Lectures covering congenital heart disease, pediatric imaging principles, and advanced echocardiography techniques.
- Online Modules & Testing: Access to a structured e-learning platform for reinforcing core content.
- Simulation: Structured practice opportunities to build technical skills.
- Clinical Instruction: Direct mentorship from CHOP’s world-class cardiology and echo teams.
- Capstone Assessment: Final evaluation of skills, preparation for registry exams, and letters of reference.
Outcomes
Graduates will:
- Receive proof of training hours
- Be eligible to sit for the Pediatric Echo Registry (ARDMS or CCI)
- Obtain reference letters from CHOP staff
- Be considered for available positions at CHOP
Application information
Applications for the inaugural class (July 2026 start date) will open in Spring 2026.
Eligibility: To apply, applicants must already be a CCI or ARDMS registered cardiac sonographer, RCS or RDCS. They must also need at least one year of experience in the field. Applicants who are registry eligible or new graduates may be considered but must be able to scan independently and proficiently with at least 400 clinical hours completed, as well as endorsement from clinical preceptors and/or leadership to endorse candidacy and skills.
