About the Center for Pediatric Resuscitation
Who we are
The Center for Pediatric Resuscitation is composed of an interdisciplinary team of experts in resuscitation and implementation science who provide extraordinary clinical care, pioneer translational research, and lead exceptional training in an effort to save more lives.
Our critical care, anesthesia, cardiology, neurology, neonatology, emergency medicine, trauma, rehabilitation, epidemiology, informatics and human factors engineering specialists collaborate to care for children at high risk for cardiac arrest and resuscitation. Based on broad experience at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and in collaboration with the leading institutions and experts around the world, we have developed next generation interventions, training materials and programs, which we disseminate through workshops, presentations, co-laboratories, external site visits, and scholarly exchange programs to develop high-reliability organizations across the world.
We are pioneering translational research, exceptional training and extraordinary care to achieve our overall mission: to save children’s lives through discovery, dissemination, implementation and support of optimal resuscitation practices in every hospital and community.
What we do
There is wide variability in the treatment and care of children who require resuscitation, with the chances of survival following in-hospital pediatric cardiac arrest ranging from 10% to 70%. Most healthcare organizations have limited expertise, capacity and systems of care to efficiently measure and improve how they recognize, prevent, prepare for, manage risk for and treat pediatric clinical deterioration events and cardiac arrests.
CHOP’s Center for Pediatric Resuscitation offers programs of care, contextualized implementation of training, expert risk management consultation, and tele-support programs designed to improve the quality of pediatric resuscitation delivered by individuals, hospitals and healthcare systems.
We have four primary goals:
We offer innovative training interventions to optimize team performance during a resuscitation, including point-of-care CPR training, multidisciplinary simulation and debriefing. The Center provides educational programs designed to assist frontline providers in recognizing and initially treating and managing patients who are at high risk of cardiac arrest and for low-volume but high-risk events. These educational endeavors support early intervention and improve team competency when a patient’s condition has deteriorated.
We collaborate with staff and faculty, all patient care units, and the executive leaders of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to promote the highest quality of care for our patients. Along with the ability to benchmark our performance against national gold standards for resuscitation and other major children’s hospitals as a member of the American Heart Association’s “Get with the Guidelines—Resuscitation” quality improvement program, the center has developed and implemented robust internal resuscitation quality improvement dashboards to track and examine trends, process improvements, and inform performance for our in-hospital providers and, ultimately, ensures the best outcomes for our patients.
Our robust research program encourages novel, innovative and pioneering resuscitation-based research and aims to successfully translate and implement these finding to promote best practice and improve provider bedside operational performance on patients and patient and population outcomes. Our diversity in research incorporates the best in animal laboratory research, clinical research and quality improvement in order to measure, analyze, publish, implement and disseminate improved evidence-based CPR data. The goal of this work is to inform current and future evidence-based resuscitation guidelines in order to saves more lives and improve quality of life for children.
We provide both local, regional and international scholarly exchange programs to develop high-reliability organizations across the world. Our tele-support command center enables us to provide real-time best-practice support, consultation, training and feedback to promote best outcomes in our communities and beyond.
