Introducing CHOP OPEN!
We have launched our new and improved learning platform, CHOP OPEN. Learn more and register for free.
This seminar focuses on Anesthesia and was delivered in Salzburg, Austria, from January 20 – 26, 2019. The lectures are prepared by staff from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in weeklong modules that are prepared in affiliation with the American Austrian Foundation's Open Medical Institute. The lectures of this seminar are presented in the order of the live event.
Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (pARDS)
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the historical definitions of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), the trend of pediatric mortality & morbidity, the pathophysiology in ARDS, and the approach to mechanical ventilation & supportive care.
Presenter: Margaret A. Priestley, MDWhat is a Difficult Airway?
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the general approach to the pediatric difficult airway, three critical intubation techniques, and endotracheal tube exchange in the patient with a difficult airway.
Presenter: Paul Stricker, MDImproving Postoperative Care and Reducing ICU Ventilation Time
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the rationale and background for collaborative learning, the reasons for early extubation, cost-benefit analyses and more.
Presenter: Geoffrey L. Bird, MD, MSIS, FAAPPerioperative Quality Improvement
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the history and theory of quality improvement, the different methodological approaches to quality improvement, and be able to provide an example of a perioperative improvement project.
Presenter: Wallis T. Muhly, MDPediatric Sepsis: Epidemiology & Importance of Bundles
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand why sepsis is important, grasp bundles of proposed sepsis management, and learn from examples on how to track improvement.
Presenter: Margaret A. Priestley, MDCardiac Intensive Care Unit Potpourri
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the rationale for newer approaches to EEG monitoring in neonates with congenital heart disease, discuss the rapidly evolving innovations with lymphatic evaluations and treatment, and the novel collaborative methods for improving outcomes in single ventricle heart disease.
Presenter: Geoffrey L. Bird, MD, MSIS, FAAPPerioperative Bleeding and Transfusion Management in Pediatrics
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the general perioperative transfusion principles, how to manage massive transfusion and protocols, and potential complications found acutely of transfusion.
Presenter: Paul Stricker, MDMore Effective Teams and Improving Results
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the importance of continuity, handover, and communication between the OR and ICU, to ensure the most efficient, accurate, and complete transfer of information possible between the teams.
Presenter: Geoffrey L. Bird, MD, MSIS, FAAPPediatric Regional Anesthesia
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand data supporting the safety of using regional anesthesia in children, discuss the evolving role of regional anesthesia in the care of children, and reflect upon the future questions that need to be answered in order to advance this practice in children.
Presenter: Wallis T. Muhly, MDAnesthesia for Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand how to improve care in craniofacial reconstruction, findings in management techniques, and lessons learned in implications for practice.
Presenter: Paul Stricker, MDPerioperative Care for Posterior Spine Fusion
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand data supporting optimal care in pediatric spine fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, including preoperative testing, neuromonitoring, blood loss mitigation, analgesia, and quality improvement.
Presenter: Wallis T. Muhly, MDPediatric Critical Care Medicine Potpourri
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand hand hygiene compliance, a touch upon publications regarding adult and pediatric patients, grasp delirium in pediatric patients, and progressive mobility in the ICU.
Presenter: Margaret A. Priestley, MDEnhanced Recovery After Pediatric Surgery
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the origin and central tenants of ERAS, the role of ERAS in adult surgical populations, discuss how ERAS principals are being used in pediatric surgical patients, and how ERAS in children might look different than ERAS in adults.
Presenter: Wallis T. Muhly, MDPediatric Anesthesia Potpourri
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand anterior mediastinal masses and emergence delirium, including the epidemiology, evidence-based medicine, and case studies.
Presenter: Paul Stricker, MDEmergency Response Systems & Situational Awareness
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand the creation of rapid response systems, discuss the creation of the CHOP system for patients outside of the ICU and in the operation room, and grasp the concept of huddles & situational awareness.
Presenter: Margaret A. Priestley, MDImproving Resilience and Addressing Burnout
At the end of this session, learners will be able to understand why burnout occurs everywhere, discuss steps that all levels of an organization can take to reduce it, and why learning these steps can increase resilience.
Presenter: Geoffrey L. Bird, MD, MSIS, FAAP
