Marcus Davey, PhD Marcus Davey, PhD, is a Senior Research Investigator with the Center for Fetal Research at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, an extension of CHOP's Center for Fetal Diagnosis & Treatment. Locations: Main Campus Phone: 1-800-468-8376 Background Marcus Davey, PhD, is a Developmental Physiologist and Senior Research Investigator in the Center for Fetal Research, the research extension of the Center for Fetal Diagnosis & Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Davey earned his BS (Honors) at the Monash School of Medicine in Melbourne, Australia, completing his honors thesis on respiratory control following preterm birth. He received his PhD from the Department of Physiology at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. During his doctoral studies, he established a neonatal pulmonary function laboratory to evaluate prenatal therapies for human disease, including severe lung hypoplasia and prematurity of birth. In 1998, Dr. Davey was the recipient of the PSANZ Young Investigator Award. Tackling Extreme Prematurity CHOP researchers design a unique womb-like, fluid-filled environment to bridge critical time from mother’s womb to outside world. Since joining Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1999, Dr. Davey has been part of a team working on cutting-edge studies aimed at treating a wide variety of genetic disorders before birth. His post-doctoral work has centered on prenatal surgical and genetic therapies for lung development disorders, with a focus on the biology of the lung and conditions such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Davey’s research focus extends to areas of pediatric respiratory and pulmonary issues and pediatric surgery. He is well published, with authorship on over 40 peer reviewed research publications. Dr. Davey’s extensive research has explored the safety and efficacy of fetal therapies with the potential to improve respiratory function and lung development. He studies the impact of prematurity on lung development and how in utero treatments such as tracheal occlusion affect respiratory function and lung growth. Since 2013, Dr. Davey has served as co-investigator and “lead-tinkerer” on the study of an extra-uterine support device being tested in CHOP’s Center for Fetal Research. With perseverance, innovation and a unique bioengineering skillset, he co-developed a unique womb-like, fluid-filled environment to provide prolonged (up to four weeks) physiologic support for extreme prematurity. He is study director on an FDA Early Feasibility Animal Trial to evaluate clinical translation of this groundbreaking technology.
