Background

Sarah Mathews, MD, is a Psychiatrist in the Center for Fetal Diagnosis & Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mathews' clinical work involves psychiatric treatment for women throughout the reproductive lifecycle, including management of mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. She has clinical experience with treating psychiatric disorders related to the menstrual cycle and those affecting women in the peri- and postmenopausal periods.

Dr. Mathews joined the psychosocial services team at the Center for Fetal Diagnosis & Treatment in 2015, where she provides psychiatric consultations for the center's patients who may require treatment interventions involving medications during their pregnancy or postpartum. She also provides outpatient clinical services at the Penn Center for Women's Behavioral Wellness, located at 3535 Market Street in University City, and in Center City Philadelphia at Penn Medicine Washington Square.

Dr. Mathews additionally provides extensive teaching for the University of Pennsylvania's Psychiatry Residency Program and Psychosomatic Fellowship, as well as for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows at CHOP, medical students, nurse practitioner students, and other providers throughout the health system. She was awarded the Albert Stunkard Faculty Recognition Award by the graduating psychiatry residency classes of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 for outstanding teaching and mentorship, and the Award for Outstanding Outpatient Psychiatry Teaching Attending by the Psychiatry Residency Program in 2015.

She is a Certified Menopause Practitioner through the North American Menopause Society and has provided lectures locally and nationally related to women's behavioral health issues in pregnancy as well as psychiatric issues in the aging female population.
