About Jena Miller, MD

Jena Miller, MD, is Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Co-Director of the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), holder of the George Leib Harrison Endowed Chair in Fetal Therapy at CHOP, and Associate Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine in Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

She cares for families facing complex pregnancies and is one of the few maternal-fetal medicine specialists in the country trained to perform the full range of procedures before birth — from ultrasound-guided treatments to minimally invasive fetoscopic surgery and open fetal surgery.

Dr. Miller’s path to fetal medicine began during her obstetrics and gynecology residency, driven by a simple goal: never to face a pregnant patient without knowing what to do. That commitment deepened the day she observed a fetoscopic laser surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome — a minimally invasive procedure that can save both babies. “To witness a single surgery completely change the course of a pregnancy was the most remarkable thing I had ever seen,” she recalls.

Before joining CHOP, Dr. Miller spent more than a decade at Johns Hopkins, where she helped build their fetal therapy program and pioneered fetoscopic techniques for spina bifida repair. Her research focuses on advancing minimally invasive interventions, early-pregnancy therapies and treatments for fetal anemia. She co-leads the NIH-funded RAFT Trial — a national study exploring whether adding fluid to the womb can help babies with severe kidney problems develop better before birth — and participated in an international trial on therapies for hemolytic disease (blood disorders) of the fetus and newborn. Her work has appeared in leading journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association and Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

At CHOP, Dr. Miller is passionate about expanding access to world-class fetal care and supporting families through every step of their journey. Her philosophy centers on listening, clear communication and compassionate guidance.
