Dr. Tasian is committed to the compassionate care of all children who need urologic care. He is interested in developing systems that integrate advances in urologic knowledge into clinical practice. Dr. Tasian has expertise in the surgical and medical management of children with kidney stones and is committed to ensuring that families are fully informed of all treatment options for their child. Research Interests

Dr. Tasian's research focuses on two areas: Nephrolithiasis (kidney stone disease) among children and adults, and chronic kidney disease in children with congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract.

Through these research efforts, Dr. Tasian is devoted to decreasing the lifetime burden of kidney stone disease, with a particular emphasis on clinical trials of interventions to change behaviors to decrease kidney stone recurrence, the environmental epidemiology of nephrolithiasis, and understanding the role of the gut microbiome in kidney stone disease. These efforts are supported by multiple ongoing grants from the NIH/NIDDK.

Dr. Tasian has led the development of the pediatric arm for and is multiple-PI of the Urinary Stone Disease Research Network (USDRN). The USDRN is conducting the ongoing multi-institutional Prevention of Urinary Stones with Hydration (PUSH) randomized controlled trial at four clinical centers in the United States, and will also conduct a study to elucidate the mechanisms of pain due to ureteral stents among adolescents and adults undergoing ureteroscopy for urinary stones.

In addition, Dr. Tasian has active investigations examining risk factors for chronic kidney disease progression among children with congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract. He is Project Leader for the Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and co-PI of Transdisciplinary Award to develop anatomic biomarkers of CKD progression for children with urologic abnormalities. This research seeks to identify novel anatomic biomarkers that can be measured using routine renal ultrasonography. The goal is to identify the population of patients who may benefit from early interventions to slow progression of chronic kidney disease.
