The Summer of Healing Challenge

As children head outdoors to play this summer, there are patients who will spend their days in the hospital. As a member of our employee family, your hard work makes brighter days possible for the children in our care. This summer, you have the chance to further your impact for children like Matthew by making a gift to the Summer of Healing challenge – we set a goal to raise $200,000 by June 30 and you can help us reach it.

Matthew's story

Matthew B. Before he was even born, a prenatal ultrasound revealed that Matthew had a complex heart disease. His heart was on the wrong side of his body and the blood vessels leaving his heart were arranged abnormally. Matthew would need a series of heart surgeries to repair his heart.

He had his first procedure at just 3 months old, and his second when he turned 3 years old. But a year after his surgery, Matthew’s health began to deteriorate. “He had no appetite or energy”, his mother Kelly recalls.

That’s when his family turned to CHOP…

After receiving a mechanical valve, Matthew was listed for a heart transplant. While he waited, he was given an implant that would alleviate the stress on his heart. A few months later, a donor heart match was found for Matthew. The procedure transformed his life and he began to regain his energy and become the active boy he is today.
