Reflections on Hosting Breaking Through
Since 2018, CHOP’s CEO Madeline Bell has hosted the podcast Breaking Through. Below she reflects on the more than 40 episodes she has recorded, featuring some of the most inspiring stories from across CHOP.
“I have always loved podcasts, so it has been a lot of fun to host one of my own. The experience has given me a front-row seat to the extraordinary work that happens at CHOP every day. I have spoken with patients and families, physicians, scientists, researchers, philanthropists and many others – all of whom help make CHOP a remarkable place.
Some of my favorite conversations were with patients and their parents. Hearing firsthand about their journeys, how they found their way to CHOP, and what their experiences meant to them has been both humbling and inspiring. Their stories are powerful reminders of how the CHOP team changes lives.
I also loved talking with our scientists and physician-researchers. Many of them shared the stories behind their biggest breakthroughs, offering insights into how they work and what inspires them. They also discussed the unexpected paths that brought them to CHOP, often overcoming significant obstacles along the way. Their passion, perseverance and commitment to improving children's lives have been extraordinary to witness.
Many of these stories, breakthroughs and milestones have been powered by philanthropic support. And every episode has left me with a deeper appreciation for CHOP, its champions and the people who make it special.
In the final episode of Breaking Through, I interviewed Dr. Joe Mitchell, who will succeed me as CEO when I retire in October. I hope you'll take a few moments to listen as we discuss the future of CHOP and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Thank you for listening!”
