Engaging activities, like music, books, counting or conversation, that help shift your child's focus during a procedure. Choose an activity that feels familiar and calming.

All Ages

VIBRATION

A small device that uses gentle vibration and cold to help numb the skin and reduce discomfort during needle procedures. It is held near the area where the needle will go.

Specific age groups

Infants

BREASTMILK

Breastfeeding or offering breastmilk through a syringe can soothe infants and reduce discomfort during procedures.

Infants

SWEETENED WATER

Small drops of sweetened water given by mouth to help calm infants during procedures. A great option for families where breastmilk is not available.

Ages 4+

PLASTIC DISC

A small plastic disc with bumps on one side that help reduce sensation during a needle procedure. The disc is placed bumpy-side-down directly on the skin around where the needle will go, changing how the skin feels pressure.

Ages 4+

COOLING SPRAY

A fast-acting spray that creates a cooling, numbing effect on the skin to reduce discomfort. It is sprayed on the area the needle will go right before the procedure.
