Measles Exposures at CHOP

Measles Exposures at CHOP

Reviewed on

A visitor to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU) at the Main Hospital in Philadelphia on September 11 was later confirmed to have a probable case of measles by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH). We immediately enacted our established infection prevention protocols, including administering post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to provide care and isolating patients known to be exposed.

CHOP, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and PDPH are working closely to prevent the spread of measles, including contact tracing. We are also in close contact with admitted families to share guidance. Our priority remains the health, safety and well-being of patient families and staff.

PDPH has shared helpful guidance in its press release, including:

  • This event took place at CHOP’s Philadelphia Hospital on Friday, September 11, at the following times and locations:
    • CHOP NICU West: 9:30 am to 4:15 pm
    • CHOP NICU West Family Lounge: 9:30 am to 4:15 pm
    • CHOP Atrium: 9:30 am to 4:15 pm
    • CHOP Main Cafeteria: 12:05 pm – 2:45 pm
  • Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. People who aren’t protected against measles can get the virus up to two hours after someone else with measles left the same room or airspace.
  • The early symptoms of measles are fever, runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash.
  • If you have received a measles vaccine, you do not have to do anything. MMR vaccines are extremely effective at preventing measles. If you have not received a measles vaccine, you should receive a dose of MMR vaccine. Talk to your healthcare provider to learn how you can get this vaccine.
  • You should also notify your local health department (Philadelphia: 215-685-6740) or the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 877-724-3258 for residents of other counties in Pennsylvania if you develop measles symptoms.
