Published on in CHOP Family News

The Cellie Coping Kit, a CHOP-designed tool developed to help cancer patients ages 6 to 14 years old better cope with their diagnosis and treatment, has been adapted for children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and their families. Sickle cell disease creates significant physical and psychosocial strain on children and their families, often creating the need for behavioral and emotional support.

The Cellie Coping Kit is comprised of a stuffed toy named Cellie; 100 coping cards with different tips for dealing with medical procedures, Hospital visits, and feelings of fear and uncertainty; and a book for caregivers to help them learn how to help their child cope with the disease and how to talk to other family members and friends about sickle cell disease.
