November 3, 2013 — Matias Velez was diagnosed with hyperinsulinism in his home country of Ecuador. Wanting the best possible treatment for their child, his parents started a social media campaign to raise awareness of his illness, and raise enough money to come to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
In September, Matias and his family arrived in Philadelphia, and the little boy was treated by endocrinologist Dive De Leon-Crutchlow, MD.
