Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) recently announced the establishment of the Timothy J. Raymond Endowed Chair in Pediatric Resuscitation Science at a celebration honoring the inaugural chair holder, Todd Kilbaugh, MD.
A generous gift from Mary Jane Raymond established this endowed chair to support the work led by Dr. Kilbaugh as director of CHOP’s Resuscitation Science Center. The chair is named in honor of Raymond’s late nephew, Timothy J. Raymond, who was a patient of Dr. Kilbaugh’s.
Dr. Kilbaugh and his colleagues at the Resuscitation Science Center discover ways to improve the outcomes of children who need to be resuscitated, with an emphasis on going beyond keeping a child alive and striving to ensure their brain health is protected. Through the Resuscitation Science Center, innovations developed and tested in the lab can and have rapidly moved to clinical trials. Some of these innovations are now standard treatment protocols, at CHOP and beyond.
“Our family is honored to support this well-deserved recognition of Dr. Kilbaugh’s work at CHOP,” Raymond said. “He and his team of clinicians and scientists in the Resuscitation Science Center are dedicated to advancing the research to ensure children suffering from trauma survive and thrive by rescuing the brain, not just the body, as Dr. Kilbaugh likes to say. As Tim’s doctor, our family saw firsthand the engagement and innovation that Dr. Kilbaugh brought to Tim’s bedside. We wanted all children with compromised respiratory systems, either from trauma or chronic conditions, to benefit from his work.”
A renowned expert in resuscitation science, Dr. Kilbaugh is also a pediatric anesthesiologist and intensivist in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and Medical Director of the ECMO Center at CHOP. His research focuses on advanced therapies for treating cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injuries, cardiopulmonary bypass, extracorporeal life support, defense against chemical toxins and therapeutics for mitochondrial disorders that reduce neurological damage.
