CHOP CEO Honored for Leadership, Vision

February 21, 2012 — The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia announces Steven M. Altschuler, MD, as the recipient of the Chief Executive Leadership Award by The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II.

Award recognizes ability to create vision and inspire others

The CASE District II Chief Executive Leadership Award was awarded at their annual conference in New York City and recognizes an institutional head for "outstanding efforts in promoting the understanding and support of education through the ability to create vision and inspire others; establishing a positive image of his institution's stature in the community; and encouraging innovations and risk-taking among employees."

“This accolade is a testament to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s commitment to its education and advocacy missions, and Dr. Steven Altschuler’s leadership in driving new initiatives to further these missions,” said Tim Buckley, chair, Board of Trustees of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Altschuler has been the chief executive officer of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for the past 12 years. Since Dr. Altschuler has taken the helm, Children’s Hospital has earned consistent recognition as one of the top children’s hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.

He has helped grow the CHOP Research Institute into one of the largest pediatric research enterprises in the world — among the top three in NIH funding — which serves as a beacon of hope for cures for diseases that afflict children. And under his watch, Children’s Hospital’s Department of Pediatrics has been ranked as the top pediatric medical school in the country.

A tireless for children and leading voice for healthcare reform

Beyond his management of the institution, Dr. Altschuler is acknowledged by his peers as a trusted voice and tireless advocate for children. His commitment to leading the national conversation addressing healthcare reform among healthcare CEO’s, academics, government officials, insurance company representatives and civic and business leaders was evident during the 2010 Kids Come First Summit hosted by CHOP.

More recently, Dr. Altschuler’s voice rings loud on Capitol Hill and in the news media in support of the Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program to combat this nation’s shortage of pediatricians to ensure children receive the care they deserve. 

Dr. Altschuler has been a powerful voice on issues related to children’s health not just because of his stature in the medical and academic community, but because he truly believes that children are our greatest resource and that it is a moral imperative to provide for all kids, regardless of their family’s circumstances. In this sense, he embodies the principles of compassion and fairness on which CHOP was founded in 1855.
