CHOP's First Fetal Surgery Patient Turns 16

June 26, 2012 — Roberto Rodriguez, Jr.'s lung lesion surgery in 1995 was the first-ever fetal surgery at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. 

Today, Roberto is a 16-year-old aspiring to play professional baseball, and the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at CHOP is a world leader in operating on babies with life-threatening birth defects before they’re born.

Since Roberto’s surgery, the techniques have become less invasive and CHOP fetal surgeons are leading the way in developing new standards of care and improving outcomes for treating babies in utero.
