Educators’ Role in Gender Identity

Published on in CHOP News

During the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools (ADVIS) conference in January, Linda Hawkins, PhD, MSEd, LPC, Co-director of the Gender and Sexuality Development Clinic, and Samantha Taylor, MSW, MEd, LSW, Clinic Coordinator for the Adolescent and Sexuality Development Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), talked about the work being done at CHOP to support children struggling with their gender identity and their families. They described the signs teachers can use to identify a child who might be gender questioning, and reminded educators of their role in supporting and referring gender non-conforming students.

Their presentation helped Alison Cupp Relyea reflect on her own experiences as a teacher and a parent, and inspired her guest blog for Team Finch.
