Young girls at Family Fun day The sixth Homeless Health Initiative (HHI) Annual Family Fun & Fitness Day took place in June, and for the second year we partnered with the West Philadelphia YMCA for another successful event. Each year, a team of volunteers offers games, crafts, fitness activities including Zumba, a moon bounce, music by DJ Mark and a health fair, including health education and safety information for families.

A team of 50 volunteers set up information tables to provide families with educational materials and a chance to learn about things like infant CPR and services provided by CHOP. Additional tables around the gym offered games and crafts. Children enjoyed making bracelets and getting their faces painted. A special guest was also available to give some children a chance to learn some boxing moves.

The day ended with warm pretzels from the Pretzel Factory and a family favorite, Rita’s Water Ice. In all, about 100 people, including 41 family members from four West Philadelphia shelters, were able to engage in activities and learn new information to improve their health.

A new vendor table at the health fair was manned by Gabriel Grove, former People’s Emergency Center resident and CEO and founder of For Her Sake Foundation Inc. For Her Sake was formed to collect and donate personal hygiene products for those in need.

What an incredible way for Grove to give back to families in need!
