Gender Transitioning: A Teenager's Unique Journey

Linda Hawkins, PhD, Founder and Co-director of the Gender and Sexuality Development Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), says it’s important to understand each individual has their own goals in a gender transition. Dr. Hawkins says it’s not always a question of male and female, but there’s a broad spectrum between those two poles. She says clinical teams need to be sensitive to gender dysphoria, characterized by anxiety, depression, and even thoughts of suicide — as an individual transitions to a new gender identity.
