Keeping Nephrology Appointments is Key—Even When Your Child Feels Well
January 26, 2026

For many children with mild or moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD), elevated blood pressure or other kidney issues, life often feels normal. Day to day, kids may have plenty of energy and no obvious symptoms.

While that’s great news, it can make it easy to forget how important regular check-ins with your CHOP Nephrology team really are.

Conditions like CKD and high blood pressure don’t always cause pain or visible changes. Kidney specialists rely on measurements — such as blood tests, urine tests, growth levels and blood pressure recordings — to assess issues that may not be noticeable to children and adolescents who otherwise feel well.

Routine check-ins let your child’s CHOP care team evaluate physical changes, track growth, check labs, adjust medications, monitor blood pressure and spot small changes which could turn into larger issues. This is one of the most powerful ways to protect your child’s long-term kidney health.

We also know that life can be busy, making it difficult to schedule — and keep — appointments. But with regular check-ins, we can ensure your child gets exactly what they need to support their kidneys.

  • Earlier detection means better outcomes: Small changes in kidney function or blood pressure can be caught and treated early.
  • Medication check-ins: Kids grow quickly, and doses sometimes need to be adjusted.
  • A chance to ask questions: These visits give families space to talk through concerns, symptoms or changes at home.
  • Building a long-term partnership: Consistent follow-ups help us understand your child as they grow, leading to more personalized care.

If you ever have issues with transportation, scheduling conflicts or any other problems accessing care, let a member of your care team know — we are here to help!

Thank you for partnering with us to keep your child’s kidneys healthy now and in the future.

You can schedule your follow-up visit online or by calling CHOP’s Division of Nephrology at 215-590-2449.
