Lecture Series: Injury Prevention 101 for Children

Published on in CHOP News

February 8, 2012 — The National Children’s Study at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia today kicks off a Library Lecture Series at the Perkiomen Valley Library at Schwenksville. The first lecture of the series focuses on injury prevention and features a presentation by the Montgomery County Health Department called “The Back is Where it’s At” focusing on seatbelt and car safety. The presentation is for children between 5-10 years of age. The series of presentations will continue over the next year in libraries throughout Montgomery County.

Presentations bring community together to socialize and learn about safety

“The presentations are an opportunity to bring the community together for a night of socializing and learning about safety,” said Jennifer Culhane, PhD, investigator of the National Children’s Study at Children’s Hospital. “The Montgomery County community has welcomed the National Children’s Study team and this is one way to show our appreciation to the community members.

"We are grateful to partner with the Montgomery County Health Department to offer this informative safety prevention event.”

CHOP Kohl's Mobile Safety Center to provide information and discounted safety gear

The CHOP Kohl’s Mobile Safety Center will also be in attendance giving out information and selling low-cost winter sports helmets. The event is free and open to the public and childcare is available for young children.

About the National Children's Study

The National Children’s Study is the largest long-term study of children’s health ever conducted in the U.S. In November 2005, the National Children’s Study named Montgomery County, PA, one of seven Vanguard sites in the nation charged with studying environmental health effects among our children and recruitment began in April 2009.

The National Children’s Study hopes to better understand how children’s genes and their environment interact to affect their health and development. Children’s Hospital has partnered with the Montgomery County Health Department, hospitals throughout Montgomery County and health-based community organizations to enroll more than 250 women into The Study.
