On July 1, Madeline Bell, formerly CHOP’s president and chief operating officer, became president and chief executive officer. She succeeded Steven M. Altschuler, MD, who retired after 15 years as CEO. The Board of Trustees of Children’s Hospital made the announcement on May 14.
Bell began her career as a pediatric nurse at CHOP in 1983, later leaving the organization in 1989 to move into hospital administration with Main Line Health. She returned to CHOP in 1995 to head Home Care and Case Management, and since then has held a number of leadership positions, advancing to executive vice president and COO in 2007. In 2010, she assumed the title of president and COO.
Bell’s numerous contributions to CHOP include the:
- development of the largest pediatric ambulatory network in the country with more than 50 locations
- implementation of CHOP’s electronic medical record
- expansion of the 4-million-square-foot Main Campus
- development of numerous nationally recognized clinical and family-centered care programs
