New Intake Process for Hearing-targeted CMV Screenings

Otolaryngology and Audiology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) have implemented a new intake process for otherwise healthy newborns who fail the newborn hearing screening as well as have a positive newborn CMV screening. This is referred to as hearing-targeted CMV screening (HT-CMV). These patients will be expedited for an evaluation with Audiology and ENT, and may be invited to participate in a clinical trial of anti-viral treatment.

If your patient meets these criteria, please call 215-590-3440 and ask for Alex Durkin, RN. Please note that this process does not apply to "symptomatic" CMV (i.e., sequelae other than just hearing loss). As in the past, those infants should be scheduled for an appointment with Infectious Disease by calling 1-800-879-2467 (1-800-TRY-CHOP). There are no changes in the clinical care pathways for those symptomatic newborns, which now often include antiviral therapy.
