NRG marks $5 million mark with contributions to CHOP

NRG Energy, one of the nation’s leading natural gas, electricity, and smart home companies, recently celebrated surpassing $5 million in contributions to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) from its charitable program, Choose to Give. The milestone was celebrated at the hospital with a check presentation to CHOP’s Cardiac Center.

NRG’s Choose to Give program launched at CHOP in December 2016. To date, NRG has contributed more than $5 million through the program, which has funded more than 30 projects and research initiatives led by experts in CHOP’s Cardiac Center.

When NRG customers enroll through the Choose to Give electricity plan, NRG contributes $50 to CHOP. In addition, NRG contributes one percent of each customer’s electricity supply charges to CHOP annually for as long as the customer remains on the plan. Besides helping children’s health, those who enroll will get the peace of mind that comes with locking in a predictable electricity supply price for 12 months.

“Thanks to the funding from NRG, our Cardiac Center team is able to conduct critical research and discover new treatments for our patients who need it most,” said Dr. Jonathan Chen, Co-Director of CHOP’s Cardiac Center. “We are grateful for NRG and their customers’ ongoing support of our Center.”

Contributions from the program help support innovative cardiac research and advanced care for children with heart disease. including the development of new treatments for pulmonary hypertension, a wireless remote monitoring program to monitor all cardiac patients with implantable electronic devices, cutting-edge imaging techniques to improve surgical and interventional outcomes for valve repair in single ventricle patients, and specialized communication training to help clinicians better communicate with patient families.

“We couldn’t be prouder to support the amazing, lifesaving work happening at CHOP every day, and it’s all thanks to the generosity of customers,” said Keri Murschell, Director of Community & Sponsorship Marketing. “When customers enroll in the Choose to Give program, they are choosing to support the critical breakthroughs taking place in the Cardiac Center. We are so honored to be able to offer that choice and contribute to this meaningful work.”
