Background

Nicole R. Washington, MD, is a pediatric hospitalist, an attending physician dedicated to caring for hospitalized children. Dr. Washington serves as Medical Director of the General Pediatrics Resident Services/Units, Medical Director of the Physician Supervisor for Patient Flow (PSPF) Program, and the Associate Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program.

Nicole loves children — their passion for life, and resiliency — which made pediatrics a no-brainer.

“Caring for children is truly a rewarding and fulfilling career experience,” she says. “I chose Hospital Medicine as it is an honor to navigate children and their families through a vulnerable time, a time of illness, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to do so and hold their hand throughout the process and toward recovery.”

She has particular interest in asthma and bronchiolitis.

“These acute processes show the resiliency of children,” she explains. “It’s wonderful to see our children get better from these acute illnesses, and the physiology is fascinating.”

She is very excited to see Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine (PHM) growing as a specialty.

“It’s a young field, and it is really evolving into a wonderful field of versatility,” she says. “We have physicians with niches in medical education, hospital administration, clinical operations, research, informatics, DEI, advocacy, health policy, etc. There’s nothing that we cannot do, and it’s a super exciting time to be a part of PHM and to be defining what impact we will have on hospitalized care and children’s health.”

She hopes families feel how much the CHOP team cares about them.

“We don’t just care about their acute stay,” she says. “We also care about who they are as people and their overall well-being, and the future development of their children.”
