Ebola: The Journey to a Vaccine (video)
In 2023, the Vaccine Education Center created a film featuring Dr. Marion Gruber. Dr. Gruber spent years working in the Office of Vaccines Research & Review (OVRR) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). During her tenure, the Ebola vaccine currently available in the U.S. was licensed. Dr. Gruber and other interviewees discussed some of the issues that came with testing and licensing that vaccine.
Given current events with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, we isolated a short clip from the original film to help people consider some of the factors that will go into developing an Ebola vaccine to address the current outbreak.

Another way of looking at the benefits of vaccination
When families think about vaccines, they make decisions based on the health and well-being of themselves and their children. However, policymakers often ask questions about the financial benefit to the society. A recent study published in The Lancet evaluated the global impact of a 50-year program called the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), which focused on making vaccinations widely available. They evaluated 14 pathogens over the years between 1974 and 2024 and compared the benefits to the costs of the program’s focus. They found that for every $1 spent, about $16 was saved. Of the individual pathogens, measles was the most cost effective.
