What do we know about vaccines and allergies?
We have large studies looking at millions of children. They show without question that vaccines do not increase the risk of developing food allergies, eczema or asthma.
What does happen is timing. Kids usually start getting diagnosed with allergies around the same age they get routine vaccines. So what looks like a connection is just a coincidence.
True allergic reactions to vaccines can happen, but these are extremely rare and occur in about one out of every one million doses. When reactions do happen, they happen quickly, which is why we observe kids for a short time after shots so we can intervene and support them if necessary.
What are the risks of connecting allergies to vaccines?
If you mistakenly assume that an allergy your child develops is because of a vaccine, you may unnecessarily stop your child from getting that vaccine, leaving them vulnerable to that infection. In addition, if you believe the vaccine caused the allergy, you may not correctly identify the real allergic trigger. Seeing an allergist can help you understand the cause of the allergy and figure out a treatment plan.

We’re still learning why allergies develop and how to prevent them. Allergies don’t have a single cause. Instead, they are a result of genetics, early-life immune development, and the environments we live in. Researchers are trying to explain why the immune system sometimes treats harmless substances like foods, pollen or pet dander as threats. They are also studying how things such as diet, viruses, microbiome, pollution and skin care products might affect the chances of having allergies.
A major focus right now is prevention, especially for food allergies. Evidence increasingly suggests that timing matters. We have learned that the timing of when infants try allergenic foods affects their likelihood of developing an allergy. For example, early introduction to peanuts has been linked with fewer peanut allergies in children – supporting the idea that earlier exposure during a key window of immune training can shift food allergy patterns at the population level. As scientists connect these pieces, the goal is to move beyond treating symptoms and toward identifying risk earlier and preventing allergies before they take hold.
