What to expect

This study includes coming to the Roberts Center for Pediatric Research (2716 South Street, Philadelphia) up to 12 times - preferably once per week for 12 weeks in a row; that would be weekly for three months. During the visits, you will be riding in a "robo taxi" - a self-driving vehicle - while completing various tasks. You may also be asked to complete surveys at the visits and/or at home. Each visit/survey does provide compensation.

This study begins with an initial screening to determine eligibility. Those eligible will then be assigned to one of two groups: One that comes for weekly in-person visits, and one that comes for two in-person visits and completes at-home surveys in between.

  • Screening call:We start with a brief phone call to review the verbal consent and ask a few questions to determine study eligibility. Those who are eligible will be assigned to a group and scheduled for the initial visit; those who are not eligible will end their participation here.
  • Initial visit:Scheduled around your availability, you'll come to the Roberts Center for Pediatric Research (2716 South Street, Philadelphia) to:
    • Complete the study consent and brief physical measurements,
    • Ride in a "robo-taxi" (self-driving simulator) while doing other things (e.g., adjusting the mirror) as directed,
    • Receive the group-related information,
    • Complete a second riding task, and
    • Complete surveys/interviews.
  • Visits 1-10:After the final visit, there will be ~10 weekly tasks based on your group:
    • Onegroup will return ~weekly to the Roberts Center for in-person visits (~30 mins each).
    • The other group will complete ~weekly at-home questionnaires (~5 mins each).
  • Final visit:Taking place at the Roberts Center ~3 months after the initial visit, the final visit you will:
    • Complete brief physical measurements;
    • Complete 1-2 riding tasks; and
    • Complete surveys/interviews.
  • Post-study surveys: After completing the final visit, you may be contacted about optional additional surveys.
