If your baby has been admitted to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for special care, you may not be able to feed your child directly at the breast for a period of time due to your child’s healthcare needs. During your time at the Hospital, you can rent lactation equipment through the CHOP Lactation Rental Station. Equipment available for rental includes:
- Medela breast pumps:
- Symphony® breast pump
- Lactina® breast pump
- Classic® breast pump
- Medela BabyWeigh™ scales
Electric breast pumps stimulate your breasts in much the same way a baby sucks, which will help to produce and maintain your milk supply. Your nurse can show you how to use the electric breast pumps at CHOP and can arrange for you to meet with a lactation specialist if needed.
Breastfeeding scales can be used to measure the amount of milk your child is able to transfer at the breast while breastfeeding.
Renting breast pumps from CHOP
It is also helpful to have a breast pump at home, since you will need to pump throughout the day and night. Electric breast pumps can be rented for use while you are at home and away from the Hospital.
Before you decide to rent a pump or scale through the CHOP Lactation Rental Station, check with your insurance company. Many insurance providers will pay for the cost of an electric breast pump while your baby is in the Hospital and cannot breastfeed as he/she would at home. Check with your insurer first; they may even send a breast pump to your house.
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia rents hospital-grade Medela breast pumps at the following costs:
- Symphony®: one month = $65; three months = $175
- Lactina®: one month = $40; three months = $100
- Classic®: one month = $40; three months = $100
- Medela BabyWeigh™ scales (battery operation only): one week = $25; one month = $55.
The breast pump kit you receive while your child is in the Hospital will work with these pumps.
