CHOP Doctors visit China and demonstrate a procedure to repair hypospadias Recently, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) doctors Charles Dean Kurth, MD, Anesthesiologist-in-Chief,  Jack Rychik, MD, Director of the Fetal Heart Program, Aseem R. Shukla, MD, Urologist and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Division of Urology and Zhiyun Tian, MD, Chief of Fetal Cardiovascular Imaging for the Fetal Heart Program, traveled to The Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Foshan in Foshan, China. They participated in an annual conference dedicated to fetal medicine, and delivered lectures as plenary speakers both at the conference and in subspecialty breakout sessions.

During their stay, Dr. Kurth and Dr. Shukla visited the hospital’s Departments of Pediatric Urology and Anesthesia. There, the pair demonstrated a procedure to repair hypospadias affecting two children.

Dr. Kurth guided the anesthesiologist and also demonstrated an ultrasound-guided caudal anesthesia injection that significantly comforted the patients and their families during the post-operative period, while Dr. Shukla was focused on the surgical aspects. As a result, more than a dozen urologists and anesthesiologists were taught the intricacies of these procedures.
