Background

James M. Callahan, MD, is a Pediatric Emergency Physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) of the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as the Medical Director of CHOP’s Global Pediatric Education program. He is a native of northern New York State and graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, and SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

He completed his pediatric residency, served as Chief Resident, and was a fellow in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at CHOP.  Dr. Callahan has served in a range of leadership roles in resident and fellow education and currently serves as the Education Officer for the Department of Pediatrics at PSOM.

Before assuming his current position, he played a significant role in many global medical education activities, including hosting numerous international observers in the CHOP Emergency Department, serving as an invited speaker at numerous international conferences and symposia, and working with international stakeholders to support the activities of the Open Medical Institute of the American Austrian Foundation in Austria, Mexico, and Chile.

He has authored several peer-reviewed articles and over twenty book chapters related to Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He has served as a member of the Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics and of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Sub–Board representing the American Board of Pediatrics. He is a reviewer for five refereed journals and serves on the Editorial Board for Pediatric Emergency Care. He served on the Guidelines Workgroup that authored the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Among Children.

His current academic and professional interests include mild traumatic brain injury (concussions) in children and adolescents, prehospital care for children, improving the experience of patients, families, and providers, and professionalism among medical trainees. As Medical Director of Global Pediatric Education, Dr. Callahan works to build and maintain long-term, collaborative relationships with international partners in global medical education, oversees international observers and scholars visiting CHOP, and works with departments, divisions, and faculty at CHOP to support and facilitate global medical education activities.
